What Is AI Search Optimization, and How Do You Show Up in ChatGPT & AI Overviews?

Somewhere in the last two years, "just Google it" quietly picked up a second meaning, and now a chatbot is out there recommending plumbers to strangers with total, unearned confidence. Here's what actually determines whether it recommends yours, or skips you entirely.

What Is AI Search Optimization?

AI search optimization is the practice of structuring your online presence so AI assistants, ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and voice assistants, can find, understand, and confidently recommend your business. It goes beyond traditional SEO by optimizing specifically for how large language models discover, verify, and cite local businesses when someone asks them for a recommendation.

The short version: traditional SEO gets you into a list of results a person still has to read. AI search optimization gets you named directly, before the person ever sees a list at all.

Why This Matters Right Now

AI Overviews now appear on more than 30% of Google searches, and their presence measurably changes searcher behavior. Ahrefs found that when an AI Overview appears, organic clicks drop by 34.5% on average, and separate research from Seer Interactive found the average organic click-through rate on pages with an AI Overview present fell to 0.61%, down from 1.76% just over a year earlier. Some of that search volume isn't disappearing, it's being answered directly inside the AI response instead of by a click.

Meanwhile, dedicated AI assistants are pulling real, if still smaller, volume of their own. ChatGPT alone accounts for roughly 77.97% of AI referral traffic, with Perplexity a distant second at 15.10%, according to SE Ranking. That's a meaningful, fast-growing channel, even though it's worth keeping in perspective: Google still sends roughly 345 times more traffic than ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity combined, per Ahrefs. AI search isn't replacing Google. It's adding a second front, and most local businesses haven't shown up to defend it yet.

How AI Assistants Actually Choose Who to Recommend

AI systems lean heavily on structured data to understand what a business does, where it operates, and how it's rated. Structured data removes the guesswork of parsing plain web text. On top of that, they weigh many of the same underlying signals a traditional search algorithm does: consistent business information across the web, and a real, current base of reviews.

The difference is what happens with those signals once they're gathered. Traditional search returns a ranked list and lets the searcher compare. An AI assistant compresses all of that down to a single answer, or a short handful of names, which means the businesses with the clearest, most verifiable, most current data get named, and everyone else, however good the actual work is, gets left out of the answer entirely. The AI assistant is not going to hedge and give the searcher ten options to sort through itself. It's going to pick one, sound very sure about it, and move on.

Content freshness matters more here too. Ahrefs found that content cited by AI systems tends to be 25.7% fresher than typical organically-ranking content. AI systems are visibly biased toward information that looks current, which rewards businesses that keep their profile and content active rather than set once and forgotten.

AI Search Optimization vs. Traditional SEO

Output format10 ranked linksOne answer or a short handful of names

Neither replaces the other. A business with strong traditional SEO but no structured data is still often invisible to AI systems. A business with perfect schema markup but no real reviews or content still won't rank traditionally, and likely won't earn AI confidence either. They're built on the same foundation.

The Practical Checklist: How to Show Up in ChatGPT & AI Overviews

  • Add LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ, and Review schema markup to your website
  • Make sure your name, address, and phone number match exactly across every directory and citation
  • Fully complete your Google Business Profile, since Google AI Overviews pull directly from it
  • Build FAQ content that mirrors how people actually phrase questions to an AI assistant
  • Keep a consistent, recent stream of reviews coming in, not a one-time push
  • Keep content current; freshness measurably affects what AI systems choose to cite

None of this requires abandoning traditional SEO. It's the same underlying discipline, structured data and consistency, pointed at a slightly different consumer.

What Good AI-Ready Content Actually Looks Like

The difference between content AI systems can confidently cite and content they skip usually comes down to how directly it answers a real question. Compare these two approaches to the same FAQ entry:

Vague

"We offer a variety of HVAC services to meet your needs. Contact us to learn more about what we can do for you."

Direct

"We install, repair, and maintain furnaces and air conditioners in [city], including same-day emergency repair. Most repairs are completed same-day, and system replacements typically take one to two days."

The second version gives an AI system something concrete to extract and cite: what you do, where, and how fast. The first gives it nothing to work with beyond "this business exists," which is rarely enough to earn a recommendation over a competitor who answered the actual question.

Which AI Platforms Actually Matter for Local Businesses

Not every AI platform is worth chasing equally. ChatGPT drives the large majority of AI referral traffic at roughly 77.97%, with Perplexity a distant second at 15.10% (SE Ranking). But for local service businesses specifically, Google AI Overviews are arguably the highest- volume opportunity of all, simply because they're embedded directly inside the search engine people are already using at massive scale, appearing on 30%+ of all queries.

Worth noting: Wikipedia accounts for roughly 18.4% of citations inside Google AI Overviews, and YouTube accounts for another 23.3%, according to Surfer. That's a reminder that AI systems pull from a wide, mixed pool of sources, not just your own website, which is part of why consistent business information across the entire web matters more here than it did for traditional SEO alone.

What This Means for Local Service Businesses

Local intent and AI search are colliding faster than most other categories. "Best plumber near me," "HVAC company open now," "highest-rated pest control near [neighborhood]," these are exactly the kind of specific, high-intent questions people are comfortable handing to an AI assistant instead of scrolling through search results themselves.

We've built dedicated AI search readiness strategies for the markets we serve, including our Indianapolis AI SEO agency services, along with Fishers and Carmel, where the underlying playbook stays the same but the competitive framing changes: newer markets need AI visibility because there's no established word-of-mouth to fall back on, while more competitive, polished markets need it because AI visibility is often the last remaining edge once everyone's already caught up on the basics.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Bottom Line

AI search optimization isn't a rebrand of SEO or a passing trend to wait out. It's a real, fast-growing second channel built on the same foundation SEO already requires: consistent information, structured data, and real, current reviews. The businesses getting structured for it now are building a lead that gets harder to close once it becomes standard practice.

Google still sends far more traffic than any AI assistant today. But the trajectory is clear, and the cost of getting ready is low. That combination doesn't come around often.

(For what it's worth, an AI assistant isn't going to fact-check your competitor's claim that they're "Indy's most trusted name since 1998." It's just going to repeat it, with total confidence, to the next person who asks. Get your own facts in front of it first.)
