Why Your GBP Matters More Than You Think
Google Business Profile signals account for roughly 32% of local pack ranking influence, according to Whitespark's annual local search ranking factors survey, more than any other single category, including on-page SEO and backlinks combined. Beyond rankings, Google's own data shows customers are 2.7 times more likely to consider a business reputable with a complete profile, 70% more likely to visit, and 50% more likely to purchase.
None of the items below cost anything. Most take under ten minutes. The businesses that outrank you are, more often than not, simply the ones that did all of them, and did them again three months later instead of considering the job permanently finished.
This checklist follows the spirit of Google's own Google Business Profile Help documentation, translated into the order and priority that actually moves rankings, rather than the order Google happens to list settings in its own interface.
Signs Your Profile Needs Work
Not sure whether your GBP is actually the problem? A few quick tells:
- ✓You haven't logged into your GBP dashboard in the last month
- ✓Your last review response was more than two weeks ago
- ✓You couldn't say what your primary category is without checking
- ✓Your most recent photo predates a haircut you've since had cut again
- ✓A competitor with visibly worse reviews consistently outranks you
If two or more of those sound familiar, don't worry about doing the whole checklist in one sitting. Read on for the order that gets you the most benefit fastest.
1. Claim & Verify Your Profile
- ☐Confirm your profile is claimed under an account you actually control, not a former employee or old agency
- ☐Complete Google's verification process (postcard, phone, email, or video, depending on your business)
- ☐Check for duplicate listings and request removal of any you find
- ☐Set up profile owner and manager access for anyone who needs it
2. Business Information Accuracy
- ☐Business name matches your signage and legal name exactly, no keyword stuffing
- ☐Address is accurate and formatted the same way across every directory you're listed in
- ☐Phone number is a local number, not a call-tracking number that changes
- ☐Website URL points to the correct, current homepage or a location-specific page
- ☐Service area is set correctly if you don't serve walk-in customers at a fixed address
3. Category Selection
- ☐Primary category is the single most accurate description of your core business
- ☐Secondary categories cover every real service you offer, without adding irrelevant ones
- ☐Categories are re-checked any time you add or drop a service line
- ☐Competitor categories in your market have been reviewed for gaps you're missing
4. Description & Hours
- ☐Business description written for humans first, naturally including your core services and area
- ☐Regular hours are accurate and current
- ☐Holiday and special hours are set ahead of every major holiday
- ☐"More hours" (delivery, pickup, senior hours, etc.) filled in if applicable
5. Photos & Videos
- ☐Logo and cover photo uploaded at Google's recommended resolution
- ☐Real photos of your team, vehicles, storefront, and completed work, not stock images
- ☐At least one new photo added weekly to keep the profile active
- ☐Short video clips added where relevant (walkthroughs, before/after, team intros)
6. Products & Services
- ☐Every core service listed individually, not lumped into one vague line item
- ☐Service descriptions written with the actual terms customers search for
- ☐Pricing or price ranges added where appropriate and comfortable
- ☐Product catalog used if you sell physical products alongside services
7. Posts & Q&A
- ☐At least one Google Post published per week (offer, update, project, or announcement)
- ☐Old or expired posts removed or refreshed
- ☐Common customer questions seeded into the Q&A section proactively
- ☐Every incoming question in Q&A answered within 24 hours
8. Reviews & Responses
- ☐A consistent, ongoing system in place for requesting reviews after every job
- ☐Every review, positive or negative, responded to within a few days
- ☐Responses written like a human wrote them, not a copy-pasted template
- ☐Review count and recency tracked against your top 2–3 local competitors
9. Messaging, Booking & Attributes
- ☐Messaging turned on and monitored if you're able to respond promptly
- ☐Booking or appointment link connected if your scheduling tool supports it
- ☐Relevant attributes filled in (wheelchair accessible, women-owned, veteran-owned, etc.)
- ☐Products, services, and attributes reviewed quarterly for anything new to add
Where to Start If This Feels Like a Lot
Nine sections is a lot to tackle in one sitting, and it doesn't need to happen that way. If your profile has been neglected for a while, here's the order that moves rankings fastest, based on where the leverage actually is:

- Categories first. It's the single highest-leverage item on this list and it's a five-minute fix.
- Business information accuracy second. A wrong address or inconsistent phone number quietly undermines everything else you do.
- Reviews third. It's tied most directly to both ranking and trust, and usually the item that's been neglected longest.
- Everything else, worked through steadily over the following few weeks.
Doing all nine sections perfectly on day one isn't the goal. Doing the first three well, this week, beats doing all nine halfway and never finishing.
Common GBP Mistakes That Quietly Hurt Rankings

- ✗Stuffing keywords into the business name field (against Google's guidelines, and it can trigger a suspension)
- ✗Using a virtual office or PO box address for a business that doesn't operate from one
- ✗Letting reviews go unanswered for weeks or months at a time
- ✗Setting hours once and never updating them for holidays
- ✗Treating the profile as a one-time setup instead of an ongoing channel
The review-response one is worth dwelling on. 80% of consumers are more likely to use a business that responds to all of its reviews, according to BrightLocal. That's a free ranking and conversion lever most businesses leave completely untouched. The Bottom Line
None of this checklist is complicated, and none of it costs money. What separates the businesses that rank from the ones that don't is rarely knowledge. It's whether someone actually works through the list, and keeps working through it every week, month after month, long after the initial motivation to "finally fix the Google listing" has worn off.
Bookmark this page. Come back to it quarterly. Profiles drift out of date faster than most owners expect, a new service added without updating the category, a set of holiday hours that never got reset, a batch of reviews that went three weeks without a response. None of that shows up as an emergency. It just quietly costs you rank, one small gap at a time.
If that's not realistic given everything else running your business, that's exactly the gap our local SEO management is built to close.
(Yes, all the boxes. We know. Nobody said checklists were fun. We just said they work.)
